Husband invites elderly parents on 2-week family vacation without asking wife, she threatens to bail if they come

Is it really a vacation if you spend it with your in-laws?

Taking a vacation means something different to everyone. For some, it means kicking up your feet on the beach and never lifting a finger except to order another piña colada. For others, it means a day packed with adventure and fun, up to the gills in activity. Who you bring with you might also affect your trip. If it's just you and a pal, it's a completely different time than if the kids were coming, or if it was a big family trip with your in-laws. These are three vastly different types of trips. You might be in the mood for one kind of trip at a certain time and another at a different time. But if you were planning on a relaxing vacation full of family time, then suddenly having the plans change would be a real disruption. If you want to relax, then you probably don't want people around you who you have to take care of. In this case, the woman in this story was willing to do that for her kids, but not her husband's elderly parents. She wanted family bonding time with just her immediate family, and had been looking forward to it and saving for it for months. She had made a plan and wanted everyone to get on board with it. And she thought they had, until her husband revealed that he had been making different plans all along.

    I love to travel but haven't much in the last 15 years while working, parenting, and helping care for elderly parents. Many of my holidays/vacation days are with my parents and H's (10 hours RT).

    Original_Clerk2916 NTA. Tell hubby either he uninvites his parents, or it becomes a solo trip for him and his parents. You don't just invite your parents on a family vacation without talking to your spouse about it. This is 100% on him. And if he ACTUALLY wanted to stick "to the plan," he would never have invited them in the first place... "the plan" went out the window the second he went rogue.

  • Curious-One4595 NTA. The correct course of action is for your husband to uninvite his parents from the trip. That was a gross violation of joint decision- making. He ruined this vacation for you. It is his job to fix it, even if it means losing face with his parents.

This might sound a little posh, but it affects my mental health / mood if I don't go on a trip for a long time. I'm going to think on how perhaps I can go do something completely carefree this summer for a few days that will allow me to recharge, and then consider going next summer for a few days of the trip without me having to do the heavy lifting...   • wanderingdev Traveling with elderly people is not a vacation. And my guess is your husband will expect you to do the heavy lifting. I would just tell him that you are not doing this. He is welcome to take his parents wherever, but you actually want a trip you will enjoy, not a job, so he will have to do it alone and you'll plan something fun for your time.

  • GrassRunner29 NTA. Husband invited his parents, he can do the work to manage them as well as planning a vacation which is catering for the elderly. Please do not let him dump this on you!
